8vo. pp. [vi], 1022. Greek text. A clean example in contemporary red morocco, gilt, trivial rubbing but extremely pleasing, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt; eggshell blue endpapers with armorial bookplates of Francis Cunningham (nineteenth century, displaying the Cunningham unicorn and motto ‘Over Fork Over’) and Sir Samuel Hoare (1841-1915), 1st Baronet and father of the Conservative statesman of the same name.
A “handy edition” of the Sixtine text, according to Darlow & Moule, prepared for the use of theological students by Roman Catholic priest Leander van Ess, who had also made a popular translation of the New Testament from the Greek into German., D & M: 4801.

Imprint: Lutetiae [Paris] ex officina Roberti Stephani typographi Regii, typis Regiis., 1546
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
16mo. pp. 528; 361, [v] (1 blank). First edition. Greek text. Basilisk device (a play on the Greek “Basileus”) of the King’s printer in Greek on the title and the divisional title (first use of device B3 according to Schreiber), with the familiar Estienne olive tree on the verso of the colophon leaf. Schreiber calls for three un-numbered leaves at the end. We appear to have two, the colophon leaf and one blank. The remaining two blanks, though of similar paper quality, appear to be the original end-papers and are annotated with prayers in an early hand. Some light waterstaining in the second part of the work. Modern calf backed boards. Book label of Elizabeth Armstrong, the well known scholar of sixteenth-century French printing in general and the Estiennes in particular. Gauffered edges, gilt.
First Greek Testament printed by Robert Estienne, and the first use of Claude Garamond’s second font of the “grecs du roi”. The first of the two ‘O mirificam’ editions (the second dates to 1549) known as such because of the dedication to Francis I, praising the King for commissioning the smaller type so that pocket editons could be printed in Greek. The support and protection of Francis I was vital, particularly when it came to printing the Bible in Greek, an activity regarded with extreme suspicion by the Catholic censors at the Sorbonne. Fortunately for Estienne, Francis himself initiated a programme of printing in Greek to display French scholarly and technical expertise, and the device of King’s printer in Greek on the title page was a powerful shield. Printing the folio Greek Testament in 1550, by which time a new king, Henri II, was on the throne, precipitated Estienne’s departure for Protestant Geneva., Schreiber 90; Darlow & Moule 4616; Renouard 65, 2.

Imprint: [Colophon: Basiliae (Basel) apud Io. Bebelium], 1531
Binding: Hardback
8vo. ff. [iv], 367, [i]. Greek text, other than the Latin preface by Oecolampadius. Four woodblocks to title representing the four Evangelists, woodcut historiated initials and headpieces opening each book (the largest reserved for Matthew). Large printer’s device to verso of final blank. One or two brief early marginal annotations. Slight soiling to title and occasional very light and unobtrusive waterstaining. Recent blind-stamped calf.
Second Bebel edition. Edited by Ceporinus and with a preface by Oecolampadius, a minister at Basel and a zealous promoter of the Protestant cause, who died of plague in December 1531 just a few months after this work was printed. A very scarce edition, and it is perhaps worth noting that copies of both first and second editions examined by Darlow and Moule were incomplete., Adams B-1651; Darlow & Moule 4605; Dibdin I, 115.

Binding: Hardback
8vo. pp. [ii], 672 Greek text, without half title. Occasional marginalia (Biblical references) in a neat early hand, one or two trivial instances of spotting but generally a clean example. Recent green morocco, gilt, by the Cottage Bindery, Bath, a.e.g.
The quarto and octavo Greek New Testaments of 1763 printed by Baskerville for the Oxford University Press are ‘beautiful editions’, according to Dibdin, and the only books printed by Baskerville in Greek. The text generally follows John Mill’s famous edition of 1707. The type itself is described by Dibdin as “large and distinct” and “elegant”. Baskerville was clearly influenced by Alexander Wilson’s revolutionary Double Pica Greek type, which had been specially cut for the Foulis Press Homer of 1756-58. Both type founders rejected the space-saving contractions and ligatures which had been faithfully preserved from an earlier era in Claude Garammond’s Grec du Roi and its descendants. Baskerville’s Greek type probably had some influence on Bodoni and Didot, but it was not revived., Gaskell Add. 2; Darlow & Moule 4756; Dibdin I, 157.

Imprint: Lutetiae [Paris], Ex Officina Roberti Stephani typographi Regii, typis Regiis, 1568-69.
Binding: Hardback
Two vols. in one, 16mo. pp. [xxxii], 494, [ii] (blank); 342, [xlii], (the first blank). Greek text. Woodcut device on both titles (Schreiber B3) and on the verso of the final leaf (Schreiber 26). Foliated headpieces and initials. Printed in a reduced version of the smallest font of the Grec du Roi, with a table of chapters at the end printed in what Schreiber describes as ‘an exceedingly minute Greek type’. Old ownership inscription on the title. Some toning and light spotting. All edges gilt.
A ‘much esteemed’ edition according to Dibdin, who also praises the elegance of the device. This is the work of Robert Estienne the younger, a son of Robert the elder and brother of Henri. Tradition has it that he refused to abandon the Catholic faith and follow his father to Geneva, and was therefore disinherited by him. He was compensated for this by Charles IX, and in 1563 was appointed Typographus Regius. This edition is based primarily on his father's 12mo editions of 1546-9 (D. & M. suggest that the work deliberately resembles the ‘O mirificam’ editions, which had become difficult to procure), but also has readings from the folio of 1550., Adams B-1670; Schreiber: The Estiennes, 239; Darlow & Moule 4633; Dibdin I, 128; Greswell, 88.

8vo. ff. [xiv] inc. blank, 256, 210. Text in three columns (Beza’s recension of the Greek text his translation and sidenotes). Occasional annotations and underlining of sidenotes in an early hand. Contemporary vellum.
The fourth ‘minor edition’ of Theodore Beza’s Greek New Testament (first printed in 1565). Beza’s text was a significant influence on English translations of the Bible leading up to the King James version of 1611. Beza himself (1519-1605), generally considered to be one of the most learned Reformation scholars, became Calvin’s coadjutor and successor at Geneva., Darlow & Moule 4651; Adams B-1713.

Some light waterstaining to the upper inner margin of the first few leaves, and a little age-toning. Contemporary prize-vellum with the arms of the Hague on the covers, slightly soiled.
Darlow & Moule note that Lambert Bos’s edition of the Sixtine text has “served as a copy for many later editions”. According to Dibdin this includes the Oxford University Press, and he also draws attention to the quality of the critical apparatus., Darlow & Moule 4726; Dibdin I, 97.
