Shaw (Lawrence of Arabia) was seconded to the British high speed flight on his return from India and assisted in preparations for the race.

4to. First Elzevir edition, and the first edition overall of the second part. pp. [xvi], xvi, 855, [xli]. With engraved title page but lacking the portrait of Elizabeth I by Crispin van Queboren. An engraved potrait of similar vintage (measuring 12.5 x 7.5 cms) has been mounted and bound in facing the title. It’s clearly derived from van Queboren’s plate, although reversed, and may well be from the 1639 8vo Elzevir edition (Willems 475). Latin text, occasional marginalia. Eighteenth century red morocco, slightly rubbed. Book-label of T. Fentiman & Sons, booksellers in Leeds, on front pastedown.
Camden is justly famous for his Britannia, first published in 1586. The Annales, covering the reign of Elizabeth I, were written at the instigation of Lord Burghley, who granted Camden extraordinary access to his personal and state papers. The first part appeared in 1615 but the second part of the work was printed posthumously here., Willems: 227.

Copper engraving, 38 x 25 cms, engraved by H. Hulsbergh after Campbell, black and white as issued, trivial marginal spotting, blank verso. From the second volume of Vitruvius Britannicus. York Stairs is the last intact water gate on the River Thames and the only remains of the once splendid mansion of the Dukes of Buckingham. Bazalgette’s Victoria Embankment has encroached on the Thames significantly, so that the water gate is now set well back from the river in gardens adjacent to Embankment Station.
