6 vols. (of 7?) Small 8vo. (16.5 x 10.5 cms) Each volume with additional engraved titles dated 1833-34, and with frontisipieces in vols. I & II. Generally clean. The works include: stories for persons in the middle ranks; tales for the common people; strictures on the modern system of female education; hints towards forming the character of a young princess; tragedies & poems etc. Contemporary green half calf over comb-marbled boards, slightly rubbed, blind-stamp of J. Galt & Co, booksellers, Manchester, to the free end-paper.
One of the original ‘bluestockings’, More was part of the circle of Johnson, Garrick and Reynolds. She was a prolific author and didactic tracts such as “The Shepherd of Salisbury Plain” (vol. I), encouraging the the poor to live wholesome and god-fearing lives, were extraordinarily popular. She was also an active social reformer. Most instititional copies appear to have six volumes as here (eg. Edinburgh, Newcastle) however, Liverpool University has a seven volume set, with “Coelebs in Search of a Wife” added in 1837.

Moule was a bookseller, writer on heraldry and publisher who commissioned what is generally considered to be the last really decorative series of English county maps. They were first issued in monthly parts with a simple single-colour wash between 1830-37, but were issued black and white thereafter, mostly being used to illustrate editions of ‘English Counties Delineated’ and ‘Barclay's Dictionary’.
