He was born in Poland in 1898 and later enlisted voluntarily with the Russian Army, during which he was held prisoner by the German Army until 1918. He ultimately fled Polish anti-semitism and relocated to Canada in 1926. He was a noted figure in Western Canadian Jewish culture and a regular contributor of works and essays to the Jewish Press in Winnipeg, as well as Toronto, Montreal, and New York. (MHS, 2016) .
