John Russell Young (1840-1899) was an American journalist, author, editor, diplomat, and the 7th Librarian of Congress. He became the editor of the Philadelphia Press and the New York Tribune and later worked with the New York Herald as a correspondent in Europe for United States government. Notably, Young was invited by President Ulysses S. Grant to join him on his 1877-1879 world tour. Young documented the journey in his book, Around the World with General Grant. From 1882-1885, Young also served as the U.S. Minister to China. In 1897, Young was appointed by President William McKinley as Librarian of Congress, a position he held until his passing. In this brief letter (about three lines in length), Young writes to the American theater critic and author, William Winter (1836-1917). Young writes to Winter about another item (possibly an article) that had likely been included with this letter (the accompanying article or item is no longer included). The letter reads, "Dear Winter, This is what I [--?] [--?], when I told you I had written something about [poor Lawrence Barnett?]." [Closing], John Russell Young." "Wm. Winter, [Esq.?]" is written below Young's signature.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
