An austerely elegant production by John Yang and Aperture Foundation: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by John Yang. There is minimal text. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. The reprodcution quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents John Yang's "Mount Zion: Sepulchral Portraits". One of the most unusual landscape-cum-portrait collections ever taken by a contemporary photographer gone too soon. "Mount Zion refers to an Orthodox Jewish cemetery in Queens, New York, built in 1893, sandwiched between a New York City Sanitation plant and the Long Island Expressway. Sepulchral Portraits refer to miniature photographs once placed on many of Mount Zion's tombstones, a custom brought over by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. These images were burned onto porcelain or metal tablets and then glazed. The process was, at the time, seen as permanent. But the ravages of the elements, pollution, and vandals have transformed these portraits into something else altogether. What remains of them, and what has become of them, is what John Yang has set out to portray in his series of photographs" (Aperture Foundation). The result is one of the most moving photographic records we shall ever see. Every single photograph in this collection quivers with life, memory, pain, and beauty. An American photographer of Chinese descent, John Yang was trained in philosophy and was an accomplished architect before turning to photography. He and his work deserve to be better-known. John Yang died on September 28, 2009 at the relatively young age of 76. An absolute "must-have" title for John Yang collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by John Yang. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 88 color plates. One of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOHN YANG TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 189102423X.
