'An Eye of the Fleet' introduced Nathaniel Drinkwater as a midshipman in the frigate Cyclops in action in Admiral Rodney's dramatic Moonlight Battle in 1780 and on special service in South Carolina with grim actions fought at sea and on land in the American War of Independence.
'A King's Cutter' finds him back in the Royal Navy in 1792,after a time with Trinity House, appointed to to the twelve- gun cutter Kestrel commanded by the inscrutable Madoc Griffiths. He is involved
in secret and dangerous operations off the French coast;in the rescue of emigres and landing of agents with the gathering menace of the French Revolution. As Europe is plunged into war,Kestrel takes part in the struggle for supremacy in the Channel and Drinkwater has some sinister encounters with Edouard Santhonax in whom British government agents are taking an increasing interest. It is through Drinkwater's initiative that the network of intrigue is discovered,as the Royal Navy is paralysed by mutiny and Kestrel stands almost alone between the Dutch Fleet and disaster.Events move to a climax off Camperdown and in the aftermath of the bloody battle,Drinkwater and his opponent come face to face. The second book of a planned series of four,of which only three were published, due to author's death. This is the scarcest and most elusive title of the series.
