This Pulitzer Prize novel is when Thornton Wilder first presented historical subject matter as a backdrop for his work - the search for justice and peace, the role of Christianity and meaning in human relationships, etc. Wilder's story is about five travelers in 18th-century Peru who are killed when a bridge collapses. A priest interprets the story of the victims in an effort to explain divine providence. A wonderful story.
