Original publisher's green cloth binding. 4 3/4" x 7." 100 pages, complete. A black and white frontispiece shows a man and a woman in a field is included. The title page and "Prelude" show smaller black and white illustrations of natural scenery with a river and moutain and a wagon in a bucolic landscape, respectively. Four pages of advertisements in the back for other books by Whittier (three black and white illustrations included with the advertisements). Gilt decorations and lettering on front cover and spine. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. A collection of poems by John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), who was an American poet, a Quaker, and an advocate for the abolition of slavery. The poems include the following: "Prelude," "Among the Hills," "The Clear Vision," "The Dole of Jarl Thorkell," "The Two Rabbis," "The Meeting," "The Answer," "G. L. S.," "Freedom in Brazil," "Divine Compassion," "Lines on a Fly-Leaf," and "Hymn for the House of Worship at Georgetown."
