The 3rd Sea Scout title following on from 'The Scouts of Seal Island' (the first and seemingly the forerunner of his Sea Scout stories.Baden-Powell founded the scouting movement in 1908,the same year as Westerman's first published book 'A Lad of Grit.' A keen supporter of the movement,it influenced many of his books subsequently.) and The Sea Scouts of the 'Petrel.' In this series of books Westerman uses a plot device that he returns to in other titles in this series. The main part of the plot is that of making a sailing voyage along the south coast of England and then returning to the home port.Along the journey there are various incidents. The scouts meet up along the way with foolish mariners, criminal types and youngsters who are then 'saved' by their membership of the scout movement. A boy's adventure novel featuring a troop of Sea Scouts and their exploits. The 1st Milford Sea Scouts are based in the Keyhaven Creek and their Scoutmaster is called Armitage. To gain any real sailing experience the scouts plan to volunteer in the summer holidays to crew other people's boats. An advert brings a couple of replies: navigate a motorboat from Oxford to Teddington. As the trip on the upper stretches of the Thames,it now involves lots of negotiation of numerous locks.Their job is extended so that they can take it on to Brightlingsea. The second job involves taking a sailing boat from Great Yarmouth to Poole,Dorset. During the journey they rescue a dog from a sandbank at the mouth of the Thames. As usual, the Scouts encounter problems trying to make harbour, with dragged anchors, disabled craft and other incompeteent mariners. Reunited with the owner of the first motor boat, the owner decides to hand the vessel over to them, providing they agree to keep it available for him as and when he requires a summer holiday or cruise. The motor boat is called 'Olivette' and it appears in the next two books in the Sea Scout series.. Percy Francis Westerman was a British author and journalist.Specifically, he wrote scores of books for boys and was,in the 1930s,outstandingly the most popular writer in that particular genre.Westerman wrote his first book in 1908,when he was 32.His last came out in May,1959,three months after he died. In all, 170-odd books, plus a torrent of articles and short stories.
