[With 'BOOK PRODUCTION WAR ECONOMY STANDARD'.] VG/G.No owner inscrptn per se, but a Christmas seasonal colour illustrated,adhesive sticker label with ink presentation inscrptn,pasted to front pastedown,being partially,but not completely hidden behind and by,the front inner flap of dw/dj.Colour illustrated front+spine of dw/dj with edge wear with multiple creases and a few small closed tears too,to front top+lower edges,rubbing and chipping to all corners with some minor loss,several small closed tears along all top+bottom edges,splits to fold front inner flap of dw/dj and some further losses at head+foot of wrapper's spine/ backstrip - the body of same with minor abrasions - wrapper approx 92% present.A meandering closed tear from spine's gutter fold and across and down the body of front panel of dw/dj.Loss to head of spine/ backstrip includes the complete title lettering,whereas foot of same incurs creasing.crumpling,chipping and tears but these still attached but with some minimal loss.Rear panel age-soiled,grubbed with fluid stain along it's top edge and a further couple of smudges to body of panel.Described in detail as one of the very few 1st edns offered with a near complete - as opposed to partial - dw/dj, which could benefit from sympathetic restoration. Publisher's clean,reasonably sharp-cornered,original air-force blue cloth boards/covers with bright,crisp,black ink lettering to front+spine,rear panel plain and undecorated and clean plain white eps. Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks,tears,splits or fraying present,hinges solid and sound with no cracking.Due to condition and incompleteness of dw/dj,concomitant sunning/bleaching of board's original colour,to all the areas of dw/dj's absence of missing portions or protection: i.e. front top+bottom edges with thin narrow strips along same,a thin narrow strip at foot of spine,and width of spine 1.5" by approx 1.5" deep, area concomitant with missing title lettering of dw/dj,and all corner tips bleached.Top edge coloured dark blue,fore-edges very lightly aged/ toned - much less than normally encountered or would expect for a book of its age - with very minimal,faint and sporadic foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight,clean - text body unusually, remarkably and exceptionally clean - virtually spotless without noticeable foxing/spotting - accidental uniform lower corners' creases to pp277-282,no other intentional dog-ear reading creases to any other pages' corners,else appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,8vo HB+ dw/dj,1st edn,5-312pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,XXIV (24) chapters,all 4 b/w illus - frntis included,called for and present,by M Mackinlay interspersed throughout the text and the book,plus [unpaginated] half-title,b/w illustrated frntis,title page,and an illustrations list/table with blank recto. N.B. 'BOOK PRODUCTION WAR ECONOMY STANDARD'. 'The paper and binding of this book conform to the authorised economy standard' advice/notification to recto of title page.A very uncommon example - particularly of this 1st edn title - with a dw/dj,in a book of its age,and given it's period of production,i.e. 1940-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of cheap paper stock generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded.With war-time paper rationing and conservation of that and other materials,pulping was actively encouraged, so publishers with restricted and limited quantities for publishing,opted towards highly acidic and therefore cheaper paper, allowing for more books to be produced. Books made with this cheaper material tend to degrade faster,exhibiting several faults,blemishes,foxing/spotting etc.,and subsequently are uncommon and harder to find in a particularly fine condition. Percy Francis Westerman was a British author and journalist.Specifically,he wrote scores of books for boys and was,in the 1930s,outstandingly the most popular writer in that particular genre.Westerman wrote his first book in 1908,when he was 32.His last came out in May,1959,three months after he died. In all,170-odd books,plus a torrent of articles and short stories for other periodicals and magazines. Since April 2013 and in March 2015,again in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering it's prices,weight allowances,dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
