The episodes of the struggle with Spain led by Drake and Hawkins,of the Plymouth Company's colonisation of America,of the Mayflower,of the three years seige in the Civil War,of the feud with Charles II,of the Napoleonic alarms and of the martyrdom of Plymouth in the German raids of 1941 give the author some outstanding chapters.Others describe the efforvescence of art and science in the 18thC,the age of Reynolds and Northcote,Haydon and Eastlake,and the unique position of the Corporation of Plymouth,the first created by Act of Parliament.Its democratic constitution gave it high authority and for centuries it had a large share in organising the defence of the westermnost fortress of British power.
