A. Wainwright, finished this, his last book, shortly before he died in January 1991.In the introduction, which was found on his typewriter after his death,he took the opportunity to say goodbye and to exhort the reader to 'avoid accidents and always to watch where you are putting your feet; to be kind to animals and respect their dignity; and to stop griping and to count your blessings every night.' As his eyesight failed and the world lost its detail,Wainwright counted his own blessings and, when writing about the valleys of Lakeland, relied on his memories of the landscape he loved so well. This final book, therefore,is full of personal reminiscences of happy explorations in the days when Lakeland had fewer visitors.
Wainwright travels through forty-two principal valleys and their side valleys.
He explores the best-known and most beautiful, including Patterdale - his very vision of heaven - Borrowdale and Langdale,as well as lesser-known or more remote valleys, such as the Cartmel Valley
and Bannerdale.Throughout he finds a quiet
transcendent joy in the wonders of nature,
but occasionally laments what he perceives
as man's negative effect on the landscape.
With his intimate knowledge of the area and its history,Wainwright evokes the dignity, charm and elegance of its distinctive valleys in this book, the culmination of a love affair with Lakeland
that lasted over fifty years.
Superbly illustrated with Derry Brabbs's timeless photographs,'Valleys of Lakeland'
is A.Wainwright's self-acknowledged swan song and completes the trilogy begun with
'Wainwright on the Lakeland Mountain Passes' and 'Wainwright's favourite Lakeland Mountains'.See also rja25177 and rja30938 for other author/subject related titles.
