Charming promotional booklet advertising the luxury furniture and rug company, W. & J. Sloane (also known as W&J Sloan or Sloane's). This concise booklet has very brief text that is approximately divided into two parts (text corresponding to each subject ranges from about one sentence to one paragraph in length). The first part appears as an essay, "Accepted Ideals in Classical Furniture," on Pages 1 and 3) that informs readers about the characteristics of some styles of French and English furniture currently popular in the United States at the time. This essay briefly describes the Louis XIV (Quatorze) period of furniture, the Louis XV (Quinze) period, Louis XVI (Seize) period, and Empire period. The Henry II and Francis I periods of furniture are simply named. Discussion proceeds to other English schools of furniture such as Sheraton, Chippendale, Adam, Hepplewhite, Colonial or Georgian, Queen Anne, Elizabethan, Jacobean, and English Renaissance (some of these furniture styles have descriptions). Finishing the booklet is a brief section of text promoting W. & J. Sloane as a quality furniture store that sells fine reproductions of the French and English schools and "Classic" and "Willow" furniture. W. & J. Sloane was founded by its namesakes, brothers William and John W. Sloane, as a rug importer and seller in 1843. The company soon expanded its product line to include furniture and other home furnishings. Over the years, W. & J. Sloane's clients included wealthy people such as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Whitneys and its furniture appeared in prominent places such as the Breakers and the White House. W. & J Sloane enjoyed over 100 years of operation but shuttered its doors in 1985 when it filed for bankruptcy. Its last stores were sold in 1986.
