8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer: Lekutei Pardas - Gatherings of the Orchard. This is a book of Responsa [responses from a Rabbi to questions forwarded to him on real issues in Jewish law.] The author states: "The Great Eagle, Rabbi Shlomo of Blessed Memory". While the term "Great Eagle" is usually attributed to Maimonidies, as an expression of his ability to rise above the greatness of all else, this Rabbi Shlomo [Luria?] must have been someone of very great stature to have the same reference title. Of further interest to scholars is a reference that in the back of the book they also added what they're calling - rare and valuable writings - of Maimonidies. It's clear that the publishers were extremely wary of censorship. This cover page makes (deceptive) note of the fact that centuries ago Jews lived amongst atheist gentiles who cared not about the ways of God. Thus the book uses unpleasant archaic terms for non-Jews whereas nowadays our neighbors honor our Torah and govern the land in just, and perform kindness to the Jews who dwell under their wings. We would never refer to them in such language… It goes on to credit and recognize the current Emperor and Governors, and also the Office of the Censor in Vilna. Printed: 1813 Pulna'ah. 3d printing.
