Original tax stamp printed on dark maroon-pink paper. Text and illustration printed in black ink. This stamp is a perfin with two punched holes showing it has been used. Circa 1879-1880. 14 3/4" x 7." One leaf printed on front only. Certificate is very clean and intact except for three small punctures limited to left margin on front, two small punched holes (cancellation marks) at center, slight darkening, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. Original tax stamp for the "Business of Retail Liquor Dealer" by the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). Has a unique tax stamp number. The stamp has fill-in sections (which are entirely unused except for a line at the bottom with the ink signature of the tax collector, "John [Till--?]." Only other evidence of use are the cancellation marks (punched holes) at center. Printed in black ink is the year "1879" (but "1880" also appears several times) and the seal of the U.S. Internal Revenue. Small illustration at top shows Mercury sitting next to barrels of alcohol and implements used for distilling alcohol. Printed text on the right includes the following: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue; Received from _ the sum of _ /100 Dollars, for Special Tax on the Business of Dealer in Manufactured Tobacco to be carried on at _ State of _ for the period represented by the Coupon or Coupons hereto attached." Printed text on the coupons to the left of the preceding text: "Coupon for Retail Liquor Dealers in Manufactured Tobacco Special Tax for [month, year; this copy includes the months of May 1879-April 1880]." Printed text on the left reads, in part, "25 Dollars Per Year; Stub for Special Tax Stamp No. [printed number]; Issued by _ Collector, To _, Retail Liquor Dealer." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items such as alcohol and tobacco. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once. Tax stamps in the U.S. date back to the Stamp Act and were in use until 1967.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Very Good.
