Original tax stamp printed on beige paper. Printed mostly in black ink with some portions printed in red. This stamp is a perfin with three wedge-shaped holes showing it has been used. "Bureau, Engraving & Printing" printed at bottom. Circa 1884-1885. 14 3/4" x 7." One leaf printed on front only. Certificate is very clean and intact except for three small punctures limited to left margin on front, three small wedge-shaped holes (cancellation marks) at center, and light age toning. A Very Good copy. Original tax stamp for the "Business of Brewer" by the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). This is Tax Stamp No. M358. The stamp has fill-in sections (but are unused and have no handwritten portions). Only evidence of use are the three cancellation marks (holes) at center. Printed in red ink is the year "1884" (but "1885" also appears several times) and the seal of the U.S. Internal Revenue. Small illustration at top shows the U.S. Capitol and the area in front of it that will become the National Mall. Printed text on the right includes the following: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue; Received from _ the sum of _ /100 Dollars, for Special Tax on the Business of Brewer of less than 500 Bbls. per year to be carried on at _ State of _ for the period represented by the Coupon or Coupons hereto attached." Printed text on the coupons to the left of the preceding text: "Coupon for Brewer's of less than 500 Bbls. per Year. Special Tax for [month, year; this copy includes the months of May 1884-April 1885]." Printed text on the left reads, in part, "$50 Per Year; Stub for Special Tax Stamp No. M358; Issued by _, Collr. [Collector], To _, Brewer of less than 500 barrels annually." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items such as alcohol and tobacco. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once. Tax stamps in the U.S. date back to the Stamp Act and were in use until 1967.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Very Good.
