[Though undated,believed to be circa 1947/ 8.Publisher's numerical sequence at foot of title page as 392--974.Also,this title is believed to be the first 'Tom Puss' compilation to be issued here in the UK.] Neat,blue ink familial gift presentation inscrptn to half-title page and dw/dj unclipped - no price present.Bright,crisp, clean,matt,colour pictorial artwork illustrated front panel of dw/dj,with red+white and black lettering,rear panel unillustrated and plain white/cream with some inevitable and ubiquitous light grubbing; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - some nicks and tears present.A couple of aged sellotape repairs internally,on dw/dj's lower front corner and foot of it's spine/ backstrip - which also has some minimal loss too.Head of same with minimal chipping and subsequent small loss along with approx 1.5" closed tea on it's rear gutter's edge; lower corners with minimal rubbing+chipping and some minimal loss too.The spine/ backstrip lightly darkened with a light central fold/crease along it's height.Dw/dj illustration of a boating scene: Mr Bumple and Tom in a row boat,with Tom at the prow and Mr Bumble at the stern with a fishing rod, with which he has inadvertently hooked and caught the back of his own shirt,making him think he has caught a fish.Top+fore-edges inevitably but lightly aged/toned and generally clean without ubiquitous foxing/spotting; contents remarkably bright,tight,clean,solid and sound - near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,no childish colouring-in to any picture and no foxing/ spotting,appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,publisher's original dark blue cloth rear bd and an illustrated paper-covered front/upper bd - with dw/dj design repeated to it - corners minimally bumped - and a dark blue cloth blind spine without lettering and bright, crisp,clean illustrated eps of a variety of red+b/w character (Mr Bumble & Tom Puss) illustrations.Some inevitable off-set shadowing from dw/dj inner flaps to the free endpapers' recto and versos' respectively.UK,slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn, 9-92pp [paginated] includes 7 illustrated stories (1st: The Magic Chariot and last: The Farewell Party),16 full-page,full-colour illustrations (frntis included) all called for and present,all by Marten Toonder,and a variety of 3-colour block (either red,or green or orange+b/w) text illustrations throughout the text and the book,plus [unpaginated] half-title,a full- page,full-colour illustrated frntis,red +b/w illustrated title page and first full- page,full-colour illustration to the first story and a 3-clolour block (orange+b/w) 'THE END' vignetted,illustrated last page. Described hard but fairly and honestly - nowhere as badly fault-ridden - as it reads or sounds in its decription.A really exceptional copy - especially internally - in a remarkable condition for it's age and for being a child's book,particularly considering it's possible exuberant usage and/or mistreatment over the years since its first publication.Complete and uncommon with it's dw/dj present. Marten Toonder (b. 02/05/1912 died 27/7/2005) born Rotterdam,Netherlands and lived in Ireland from 1965 until the 1990s. At 19 he went ot Buenos Aires with his father and got acquainted with the work of a well-known Argentine artist and editor Dante Quinterno,who ran a studio producing comics.Quinterno's work and creations impressed him so such that he decided to become an artist himself.His most famous comic series were the Tom Puss - a white cat and the pipe-smoking Oliver B. Bumble - a bear (Tom Poes and Olivier B. Bommel respectively in Dutch) series that appeared in a Dutch newspaper from 1941-86. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in 2016 too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering it's prices,weight allowances,dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
