The Times: History of the War, was a weekly subsidiary publication of The Times newspaper, which had been founded in 1785 as the Daily Universal Register. Its name was changed to "The Times" in 1788 and still operates to this day under the same title. This issue includes Chapters VII, VIII, and IX under the titles, "The British Army," "The Armies of the Dominions," and "The Native Indian Army," respectively. Some of the topics of Chapter VII: "Cardwell's Linked Battalions," "The Professional Army and the Citizen Army," "The Napoleonic War," "The Franco-German War," "The South African War," "The Haldane Reforms," "Drafts and Establishments Between 1904-1913," "The Infantry Division," and "Medical Service." Some of Chapter VIII's topics: "Importance of Sea Power Generally Understood," "Lack of Organization of Imperial Land Forces," "The Dominion in Advance of the Mother Country," "The Australasian and New Zealand Systems," "Defence System of South Africa," and "The Defence Act of 1912." Some of Chapter IX's topics: "Britain's Position in India," "Indian Troops at Malta," "The Gurkhas," "What Is a Sikh?," "Difficulties of Creed and Caste," and "Abolition of the 'Colour Line' in War." Chapters VII, VIII, and IX also feature many reprinted photographs and illustrations, some of which are full-page.
