Original publisher's red-purple cloth binding with small gilt lettering and decorative pattern on spine. Spine has faded to brown. No date, circa 1850s-1881. 4" x 4 3/4." 143 pages, complete. A few black-and-white illustrations including frontispiece, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for occasional foxing. Covers are clean and intact overall but have slight wear to extremities, fading along spine, and some staining or spots of discoloration on front and back. A Very Good copy. This is a collection of three short stories that are aimed toward younger readers. Each of these allegorical tales instructs readers on Christian teachings and moral principles. The stories are "The Rose-Wood Box," "Harriet Canefield," and "Grandfather Goodman." "The Rose-Wood Box" is a story is about a disobedient boy, Sam, who only agrees to be good if he is rewarded with seeing the titular rosewood box containing a seemingly magical, life-like tree and bird. Sam learns what it means to be truly good after the box brings him disappointment. "Harriet Canefield" is about the eponymous goodly heroine who has lost her father at a young age and sets out on a journey. "Grandfather Goodman" is about a kindly older man who helps a woman clear her name after she is falsely accused of stealing a gold watch from her employer; the real culprit is a flighty fellow. Printed by S. Douglas Wyeth (1817-1881), an American stereotyper whose address is stated as No. 7 Pear Street in Philadelphia in this book.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
