John Stow (1525-1605) was a tailor in Aldgate, London and a Freeman of the Merchant Taylor's Company, 1547. Largely self-taught he compiled a description of London which was first published as 'A Survay of London: Contayning the Originall, Antiquity ...' in 1598 by John Wolfe and included no maps. This is from the best illustrated edition which was compiled by Reverand John Strype and published in 1720. This image is of the Customs House. Situated at Wool Quay so named because its original existence was to collect duties on exported wool. The earliest one was recorded in 1377. Adams (1983) 25 no. 21.
