First published in 1885,although over half the verses in it were originally published under the title Penny Whistles (1883),Robert Louis Stevenson's classic collection of poems has been an enduring favourite with generations of children and parents alike.Stevenson was prompted to write verse after reading some of Kate Greenaway's rhymes. Before Stevenson, very little verse had been written as though by the child themself - the exceptions being some of the poems by Blake,Ann and Jane Taylor, and Christina Rossetti. Stevenson's work presents a child's-eye view of the world, which is fresh and spontaneous. Now,to celebrate the centenary of their first publication, the widely-acclaimed illustrator Michael Foreman brings a fresh, yet evocative and sensitive interpretation of Stevenson's words, which memorably conveys all their innocence and wistful enchantment. The text of the poems is based on that of 'A Child's Garden of Verses' first published by Puffin Books in 1952. Michael Foreman is one of the fore-most children's illustrators in Britain.Born in Pakefield,Suffolk 1938.Studied at Lowestoft School of Art and at the Royal College of Art. Lecturer at St Martin's School of Art(1963-65), the London College of Printing(1967-68),the Royal College of Art(1968-70) and the Central School of Arts and Crafts(1972).Art Director of Playboy Magazine,Chicago(1965) and King Magazine,London(1966).Painter,etcher,illustrator and writer of children's books. His illustrative work is distinctive: he often works in colour or half-tone,creating luminous effects with veils of thinly diluted pigment over delicate pencil outlines; in his etched illustrations,he uses soft ground techniques to achieve subtle tonal gradations. His imagery, ostensibly decorative, humorous or with a sometimes child-like appearance, often has menacing or bizarre overtones. He has won the Kate Greenaway Medal, the Francis Williams Memorial Prize (twice,1972+ 1977),the Silver Eagle Prize,at the Festival International du Livre,Nice(1972),the Kurt Maschler 'Emil' Award(1982),the Children's Book Award(1982),and the Bologna Graphic Prize for Youth(1982). For over five generations,R.L.S's 'A Child's Garden of Verses' has enchanted and captured the hearts of readers. To a child, these sixty-seven poems reflect the feelings, thoughts and dreams of childhood; to an adult, they evoke long-forgotten memories.Stevenson composed these "penny-whistles," as he called them, between 1881 and 1885.First published in England in March 1885,they were an immediate success and have never been out of print. The first illustrated edition of the work appeared in 1895,after the author's death in Samoa at the age of forty-four.Since then, many artists have produced accompanying illustrations to the text; but few as successfully as the internationally renowned Dutch artist,Henriette Willebeek Le Mair (1889- 1966).
