For over five generations,R.L.S's
'A Child's Garden of Verses' has enchanted and captured the hearts of readers. Stevenson's work presents a child's-eye view of the world, which is fresh and spontaneous. To a child, these 63 poems reflect the feelings, thoughts and dreams of childhood; to an adult, they evoke long-forgotten memories.First published in the UK in March 1885,although over half the
verses in it were originally composed from 1881 onwards, published under the title 'Penny Whistles' (1883),Robert Louis Stevenson's classic collection of poems has been an enduring favourite with generations of children and parents alike. They were an immediate success and have never been out of print.Stevenson was prompted to write verse after reading some of Kate Greenaway's rhymes. Before Stevenson, very little verse had been
written as though by the child themself - the exceptions being some of the poems by Blake,Ann and Jane Taylor, and Christina Rossetti. This collection includes the classics: 'Bed in Summer','The Land of Counterpane','My Shadow','Foreign Children','The Lamplighter',and 'The
Swing'.
The first illustrated edition of the work appeared in US and UK simultaneously,in 1895 [by Charles Robinson],after the author's death in Samoa at the age of forty-four.
Since then, many artists have produced accompanying illustrations to the text,of which this edn and illustrator are highly sought after and collected by collectors.
