4to. 142 pages. Illustrated. SUBJECT (S) : Shahn, Ben, 1898-1969. Edgeworn dustjacket, yellowed spine. Shahn (1898-1969) , an American artist, was born in Lithuania. He worked with Diego Rivera, painting the controversial “Man at the Crossroads” fresco for Rockefeller Center, which is now in Mexico City. He painted other public pieces for the government during the Depression, and designed posters for the Office of War Information during WWII. Much of his artwork used Jewish images and the Hebrew alphabet. “Shahn raised the aesthetic level of graphic art in the United States. As a draftsman, he was often a commentator on the social scene, always outraged at injustice, but also amused by humanity's foibles and weakness. ”(Werner, EJ) Ex library, very good condition.
