Derbyshire's reputation as the county where runs are hardest to come by reached its peak in the days of the superbly accurate fast-medium bowlers Les Jackson and Cliff Gladwin, where the captain's method was deliberately one of attrition, and not a run was given away without a struggle. With a whole day washed out at Buxton in June 1975 because the ground was covered in snow,Derbyshire cricket's image of bleakness was complete. But this is not the whole picture, for Derbyshire have had their heroes in the grand manner as well, and even a dashing batsman or two,of which the captain of the late 1980's,Kim Barnett,is a good example. And if success has not been too frequent,it is the sweeter when it comes. This history traces the story of cricket in the county from the middle of the 18th century, through the South Derbyshire club, the first important club in the county, and the formation of the current County Club in 1870. Throughout the author pauses to savour the great events and players. The greatest event of all was the Championship win in 1936,at a period when for some years the County had a side equal to any in the country, the stars being Denis Smith, Stan Worthington,Bill Copson and the Popes. Some of the other great players over the years are William Mycroft (from whom Conan Doyle took the name of Sherlock Holmes' brother),that great fast bowling character Willianm Bestwick, Harry Storer, L. F.Townsend, Charlie Elliott and, more recently,D.B. Carr, Mike Hendrick, Geoff Miller and Bob Taylor. Not to mention 'imports' like Eddie Barlow, Peter Kirsten, John Wright and Michael Holding.Derbyshire, too, has had its controversies, notably the ball from Platts which killed an MCC batsman and the simmering Harold Rhodes 'throwing' affair.
There has been a back-room embezzlement and
a Lord's final won off the last possible ball.It is a rich and varied story, and it is accompanied by a full statistical section, which includes dates and career records of all those players who have appeared in first-class games for the County. It is a record no Derbyshire well-wisher will want to miss.
