Decorated eps,214pp; over 80 b/w+colour illus by Chas KEEPING.Text is based on that of BLACK BEAUTY published by Puffin, 1982.A strikingly fresh recreation of Anna Sewell's famous novel, continuously in print since 1877,and a stunning and evocative portrait of of the life of a working horse. The first place that I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it. [First lines . . . ] 'Black Beauty.' is the 'autobiography' of a horse.Living a long and exciting life in which he has many different kinds of owners, some cruel, others kind,Black Beauty remains sweet-tempered,strong and spirited throughout. My troubles are all over, and I am at home; and often before I am quite awake,I fancy I am still in the orchard at Birtwick, standing with my old friends under the apple trees. [. . . . last words.] Charles William James Keeping (b.1924). Usually works as Charles Keeping.Born in Lambeth,London.Educated at the Frank Bryant School,Kennington,London.Served as a telegraphist in the Royal Navy (1943-46) before studying art at the Rgenet Street Polytecnic (1946-52),where he later became a visiting lecturer in drawing and lithography at Croydon College of Art (1962-78) and at Camberwell School of Art (from 1979).Illustrator,designer and writer of children's books and lithographer.Winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal with 'Charlie,Charlotte and the Golden Canary' (1967) and 'The Highwayman' (1981),and of the Bratislava Biennale Golden Apple Award (1975),and prize winner in the Francis Williams Book Illustration Award for 1972 and 1977. One of the best known illustrators of the 1960's and '70's,Keeping combines an individual drawing style and a feeling for design and structure with the ability to evoke atmosphere and create a convincing world of the imagination. He works in black or coloured ink, mostly on a fine Whatman or Hodgkinson 'bank note' paper and sometimes on plastic (Cobex). Two of his books,'Joseph's Yard' (1969) and 'Through the Window' (1970) have been made into television plays.
