Memorabilia associated with entertainment has always been special and evocative. Theatre-goers keep their programmes, their tickets and souvenirs, while objects associated with famous acts or actors have often been carefully handed down. The sword that was used by Kean was given to Irving; the mirror used by Rejane was treasured by Peggy Ashcroft; the ballet shoe signed by Fonteyn is prized by the balletomane.
When live spectacle was the only form of entertainment, performers could receive the adulation granted to pop and film-stars today.Prints and souvenirs of actors and productions were sold by the thousand, long before the camera went to the theatre. Performance is immediate but ephemeral, and yet so much careful preparation is involved - the set and costume designs, the prompt books, the sound and lighting plots, the wig and property making, the set models and backcloths.
Enthusiasts over the years have preserved these items and have generously given them to the museum.Through these images and objects, the Theatre Museum hopes to transmit some of the memories and magic, the pleasure and joy of performance. This book is not another history of the theatre.Nor is it a catalogue of objects.A glimpse into one of the richest theatrical collections in the world,it is a scrapbook of images from the museum concentrating on actors,on acting. It is dedicated to all entertainers and those involved in entertainment,to all audiences and collectors who have lavishly given or bequeathed to the museum. It is dedicated to all those who strove to ensure that there should be a Theatre Museum.
