This is a manuscript copy of Sa’di’s (1184-1283 AD) Gulistan. Sa’di was a Persian poet, known not only for the beauty of his style, but also for the social concepts contained in his work. He studied in Baghdad, where he met Suhrawardi, the founder of the Ishraqi, or “Illumination” School. Sa’di had to flee Baghdad because of the Mongol threat; he decided to take a long journey through central Asia and India, and then over to Yemen and Ethiopia via Mecca. In Syria, however, Sa’di was captured by European soldiers and was forced into slavery until he was ransomed. From Syria he proceeded to North Africa, and then to Anatolia, and finally to his native Shiraz in 1256. Of his works, two stand as his most famous: the Bustan and the Gulistan (the former composed in mathnawi or rhyming couplets; and the latter composed in rhyming prose). He is also the author of many qasidas (long panegyrics) in Persian and Arabic, of mystic ghazal (love poems), and of satiric poetry. His tomb in Shiraz is a shrine.
