This work looks at the phenomenon of Black urbanisation in South Africa, which gained momentum with the increasing industrialisation of the country. It is noted that tribal identities became blurred as the urban proletariat emerged, and that townships were soon a fertile environment for resistance to domination by Whites, particularly as communist ideology gained popularity. The growth of an urbanised class of Africans might be said to have laid the groundwork for the success of the National Party, which came to power on a segregation platform in the landmark 1948 General Election. "Afgesien van die kommunistiese invloed onder die stedelike swartes tydens die oorlog het liberalisme meegebring dat daar 'n tipe Swart-nasionalisme na vore getree het. Die stedelike swartes het losgeraak van sy stamverbintenis en die swart vel het verskillende swartbevolkings saamgesnoer en vir hom 'n simbool geword van onregverdige behandeling deur die blanke. Hy het die blanke nie meer beskou as toevlugsoord vir bestaan nie, maar het aanspraak gemaak op algehele gelykheid met die blanke. Politieke regte aan swartes is deur die Herenigde Nasionale Party gesien as die ondergang van die blanke in die land. Die 1948-verkiesing is oor die Swartvraagstuk geveg, en het 'n oorwinning vir die Herenigde Nasionale Party meegebring."
