'Psychedelic Renegades' features photos of rock music's most intriguing and mysterious artist, taken by one of the world's greatest rock photographers.
Syd Barrett was the musical genius behind Pink Floyd's first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn [1967] - and their classic early singles,'Arnold Lane' and 'See Emily Play'.Amid reports of increasingly erratic behaviour,Syd left the group in 1968 and recorded two solo albums before he finally retreated from the world of music in 1971.Said by many to have had some kind of 'breakdown',for the next 35 years he lived as a virtual recluse at his family home in Cambridge while his legend, and his status as one of Britain's most influential songwriters, continued to grow.
The photos in 'Psychedelic enegades' were taken between 1969 and 1971.Many are among the most famous shots of Syd Barrett, others have rarely been seen before, including photos taken in Syd's garden shortly before his withdrawal from the world.
Mick Rock met Syd in 1966 and they became close friends, even sharing a flat together at one point. His text provides a fascinating insight into the world of 'a mad bohemian poet'.
Syd's last ever interview, for Rolling Stone magazine in 1971,was conducted by Mick Rock and the original, unedited version of that article is reprinted here also.
Mick Rock's friendship with Syd Barrett began while he was a student at Cambridge University and flourished when they both subsequently moved to London.
His shots of Syd in the singer's Earl's Court flat were among the first Mick took as a professional photographer and from that session came the cover images for Syd's first solo album. The Madcap Laughs.
In early 1972 Mick's career took a significant turn when he first shot an almost unknown David Bowie. He went on to shoot the meteoric rise of Ziggy Stardust, amassing thousands of photographs and shooting posters, album artwork and several videos, including 'Jean Genie' and 'Life on Mars'.
Mick Rock's reputation as 'the man who shot the Seventies' was cemented with definitive images of the decade's most iconic artists including Queen,Lou Reed, Iggy Pop,Blondie,The Ramones,The Sex Pistols and Talking Heads.
A legendary figure in rock and roll photography,Mick's work remains as vital as ever and his recent work includes such subjects as The Scissor Sisters,Razorlight,The Killers, Kasabian,The Yeah Yeah Yeahs,Primal Scream, Flaming Lips,The Fratellis,Mika and The View.
His work is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery,London, and has been displayed in museums and galleries worldwide. His next book (then 2007) 'TAMASHII: Mick Rock Meets Kanzaburo',a collection of his image's of Japan's most famous Kabuki theatre company, will be launched in Tokyo,Spring 2007.His other books include 'Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust','Killer Queen','Picture This: Debbie Harris and Blondie','Rocky Horror', 'Raw Power: Iggy Pop and the Stooges' and 'GLAM: An Eyewitness Account.'.
