No previous work (1957) has brought together in one co-ordinated whole the stories of boat trains,
the cross-channel steamers and the growth and development of the harbours.Even in this age when long-distance travel is commonplace there is still
a romantic fascination bound up with a boat train
on its arrival at the coast. So strong has been this appeal to the author, since as a child he watched with instructed attention the later stages
of the building of the modern Dover Harbour, that
he has made a life-long study not only of the boat trains and Channel Packets, but also of the ports at which they met from the time that the services first began.
There is an account of the earliest small open boats which conveyed packets of mail across the Channel and the evolution of steam propulsion through to the miniature liners of to-day.
Reference is made to the private carriages of yestreday and to the private motor cars of to-day:to mail and stage coaches, and to modern chars-a-banc;nor is overlooked the pioneer cross-Channel flight of M.Bleriot,in 1909, and all that has sprung from therefrom. Here, then, is the story of the railways, the shipping and the harbours as recounted by one who has had unlimited time and facilities in which to compile a worthy record of this most fascinating subject.
