Description of the 15th-19thC history of the masks and other accoutrements, costumes etc.,worn during the Carnival of Venice,or indeed Venetian culture and society. Carnival - the headstrong desire to lose yourself in a collective universe,to live in that other world in the face of everyday life. Venetian society comes to life. Here we see it in its unrefined reality but with a touch of irreverence that takes the veil of false modesty away and enters into the sphere of private lives. In it there are shrewd courtesans, informers of the Serene Republic, painted boy-lovers (cicisebos) and noblewomen pomaded out of all the bounds of good taste - or good sense - all of them with that ancestral fever that possesses all of us,to be yet not be,to forsake the hypocrisies of everyday life to take on a freer form,in mask and costume. The mask, which "invents" the new personality to outward view and the costume which makes the wearer feel he or she is a different person, and lets them behave in a different way, both satisfy long-dormant desires, searched for in blind obedience to the new divinities in that temple of hedonism that was Venice.
