Original publisher's red cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. Lightly impressed border decorations on front and back covers. 5 1/4" x 6 1/2." 598 pages, complete. Many black and white illustrations, complete. Four additional pages of advertisements for other books in the back. Pages and covers are very clean and intact overall. Stain on the front cover and a small part of the spine. A few of the front pages, namely, the half-title, title page, and the page following the title page, have chips in the top margin not affecting text. A few numbers are handwritten in black ink and red ink, not affecting text. William John Macquorn Rankine (1820-1872) was a Scottish civil and mechanical engineer and scientific Renaissance man who was also a pioneer in the fields of physics, mathematics, and thermodynamics. He was among the first to contribute to the study of thermodynamics and focused his on the first three laws of thermodynamics. He also created the Rankine scale, a temperature scale identical to the Kelvin scale except the units of measurement are in Fahrenheit, not Celsius. Throughout his life, Rankine studied subjects outside of engineering such as natural history, botany, and music theory.
