Charming promotional booklet advertising "Rainbow Dyes" manufactured by the Rainbow Dye Company of New York. The Rainbow Dyes come in powder form and are touted as resulting in no crocking, ripping, or fading and having no poison, acid, or odor. Pages 1-19 are mostly arguments made by the Rainbow Co. in favor of using its Rainbow Dyes. Among these arguments are that the Rainbow Dyes are more economical than the "old-fashioned" ones; one does not need knowledge of what fabrics the dresses or other garments are made of before dyeing them (old-fashioned dyes required that one know if the fabrics were animal-based such as wool and silk or plant-based such as cotton or linen); Rainbow Dyes can be used on animal- and plant-based fibers alike; and Rainbow Dyes do not stain hands or cooking utensils, are non-toxic, and do not produce odors like the old-fashioned dyes. There is also brief explanation with two small illustrations showing the difference between wool and cotton fibers at the microscopic level (and why old-fashioned dyes reacted differently to each). Pages 20-21 list the available colors of Rainbow Dyes for sale including eighteen standard and twenty-five dressmakers' shades and recipes for making additional colors by combining standard shades. Pages 22-26 stress the importance of following the directions on the Rainbow Dye packets, some of which are summarized herein such as weighing the garment to get the correct dye ratio, letting the dye dissolve completely in boiling water before dyeing garments, not overcrowding the dyeing pot, stirring the garments constantly and not letting them come out of the water while being dyed, and rinsing the garments thoroughly after dyeing them (but not wringing them too tight). Pages 27- 36 provide special directions and recipes for Rainbow Dyes such as refurbishing rugs with liquid dyes applied by brush, making homemade crayons, dyeing Easter eggs, dyeing feathers and fur, making ink, and making gradated effects on garments. Pages 36-39 give recipes for removing different types of stains. Pages 39-41 give information about combining colors and which colors harmonize. Pages 42-44 further promote Rainbow Dyes and also advertise the company's Oterite Magic Color Discharge which allows darker fabrics to be dyed a lighter shade and fabrics to be restored to a white or gray color. Pages 45-48 comprise the Index.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
