"Aloha 'Oe" ("Farewell to Thee") is a song that was composed around 1878 by Queen Lili'uokalani (then a princess). It is her best-known song and is celebrated as a cultural emblem of Hawai'i. The song is said to have been inspired by an embrace between Colonel James Harbottle Boyd and a woman that happened during a horseback trip at the Boyd ranch. The identity of the woman is disputed but popular versions of the story say the woman was either Princess Likelike or a woman at the ranch. As a member of the traveling party, Lili'uokalani witnessed the embrace and began to hum the tune of "Aloha 'Oe" on the party's return to Honolulu. Other members of the party joined in and the song was completed at Washington Place. The lyrics of the song speak of sweet sentiments between two lovers as they part ways.. Book.
