An epistolary account of twenty-one-year-old second lieutenant William Lowell Putnam's death at the Battle of Ball's Bluff on 21 October 1861 and the return of his sword - which had been a gift to him from his kinsman John Lowell Gardner - to his mother, Mary Lowell Putnam, in 1897. The correspondents include Mary Lowell Putnam, Colonel William Raymond Lee and his daughter, John Lowell Gardner, Thomas Wharton, and General Charles Lawrence Peirson. Wrappers show general light soiling all over, and the lower wrap is creased at one corner, else internally clean.
