This book is devoted to the most tragic page in Jewish history - the extermination
in cold blood of six million Jewish men,
women, and children, with the result that in a few short years the total number of the European Jews was reduced by two-thirds.Such blood-letting is without precedent in European history;the Nazi enterprise was unique in its very principle. But to treat this subject is also to treat a part of of the history of contemporary Germany, for in the actual event the Jews were chiefly passive victims;the active role, that of the protagonist in the tragedy, fell to the German people as a group, acting under the
stimulus of leaders of their own choice.
When one reflects that we are dealing here
with a highly civilized nation that for many years was a torch-bearer of Western society, one realises that we are concerned with an anti-Semitic problem that is intrinsic to our entire Western civilization, an aberrant and pathological
phenomenon that lay at the very centre of the 1939-45 catastrophe;the general interest of mankind, as well as the more particular question of the future of the European community, demand that we study closely the Nazi war on the Jews.Such insights into these matters, however, as the subject suggests will only be briefly touched on;the main purpose is to compile a documentary and psychological record, so
that the reader can judge for themself and
draw their own conclusions. Some of the documents cited in this book are so disconcerting and improbable, some readers
may be tempted to question their authenticity. For have we not already seen the disappearance of publications in which
doubt is cast on the number of Jewish victims and on a great many other things? The author states that the majority of the
quotations given, especially those of German origin, come either from the Nazis archives captured by the Allies or from the records of the Nuremberg Tribunal (wherever possible, to forestall objections, the executioners are quoted rather than the victims);the original records are now either at The Hague or in Washington, as the case may be.In all the polemics that raged around the Nuremberg trials, the authenticity of these records was never questioned even by the most rabid detractors of Allied justice.
Photostatic reproductions or certified copies of these documents, as well as originals from other sources, are located in the Centre du Documentation Juive Contemporaine in Paris, an institution established by its (then 1956) present president, M. Schneerson, in 1943.
