Parr, Martin : Fashion Magazine

Julien Frydman/Magnum Photos, London, England/Paris, France, 2005

ISBN 2952410208

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Full-length Fashion Magazine. One of Martin Parr's finest achievements. Limited Edition of 2000 signed copies. The full print run was 5000 copies, of which the photographer signed 2000. The Signed Limited Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Martin Parr: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial ribbed softcovers with titles in front and on the spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Martin Parr. Like major European fashion and lifestyle magazine, the texts are in English and French. All of the photographic and design work in the magazine, including the witty fashion advertisements, was done by the photographer, "from cover to cover". Printed on thick "Condat Gloss Papier" stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. "Fashion Magazine" was launched, with the fanfare befitting a major fashion show, at the new, relaunched Rocket Gallery London from May 20 through July 3, 2005. The show travelled on to the United States in 2006. Presents Martin Parr's "Fashion Magazine". The photographer's characteristically irreverent "take" on a familiar photographic subject. The hallowed domain of Brodovitch, Avedon, and Bruce Weber, among others, revisited, retouched, and redefined. This is one of the single most purely accessible, entertaining, and enjoyable of Martin Parr's projects. It shows how a major ironic sensibility (that is often misunderstood as satirical) can have broader reach, and be moving. Parr's "invasion" of fashion photography may come as a surprise to his most ardent admirers, but he is right to point out that some of the most interesting, most vital, and most cutting-edge photography were done commercially, for fashion advertisements, magazine covers, spreads, and features, often under the tightest deadlines and most compromised circumstances. Parr cites the work of Avedon and William Klein as antecedents and professes genuine admiration for the work of such photographers as Guy Bourdin, Nick Knight, and Steven Meisel, the principal photographer/stylist/creator behind Madonna. An absolute "must-have" title for Martin Parr collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the Back Cover by Martin Parr. It is signed directly on the cover itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. This is one of few such copies of the Signed Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. The most influential and most important British photographer of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARTIN PARR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 2952410208.
