First edition in English. Folio (340 x 221 mm). [12], 1173, [22] pp. Engraved title page by T. Cecil. 323 text woodcuts. Full modern calf in 17th century style with modern endpapers, raised spinal bands and gilt-stamped red Morocco spinal label. 1st edition in English, translated by Thomas Johnson (from the 1582 Latin translation of the second 1579) edition. The elaborately engraved title page showing surgical and anatomic scenes, and portrait of Pare is the work of Thomas Cecil, a noted engraver for other prominent authors of the time. Variously described as the most influential book in Renaissance surgery by the greatest Renaissance surgeon. Pare (1510-1590) is profiled in virtually every history of medicine text. He was the greatest of the army surgeons before Larrey. The beautiful binding is fine, tight. The title page has been remounted with margins and the cartouche of Pare is a very good facsimile inset precisely into the title page; there is a 1/2" tear bottom of the title page (not affecting the original mounted page). The first page after the title has a professional paper repair of the bottom fore edge corner seen on the verso. Leaves A2 and A3 have a very light damp stain top fore edge corner. Generally the text pages are bright, with occasional age toning and pages 333-350 have a small, very light damp stain top fore edge corner. Overall a very good book which presents itself beautifully and scarce thus.. Book Condition: Very Good.
