UK,16mo,HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG/G+.No owner inscrptn,no clip to dw/dj.Grey-green weave patterned with blue-black ink printed letters dw/dj showing some distress.Chipped/rubbed to top edge with some slight loss,front edges of dw/dj inner flaps slightly darkened,rubbed and chipped again with some slight loss but bottom edges have no creases or loss apart from 1/4" loss to foot of spine/ backstrip.Spine/backstrip darkened,head of same;some loss affecting MICHAEL + last S of Fairless letters with a small vertical panel;approx 1" x 3/8", missing from centre of spine/backstrip.Described hard but fairly, basically 98% present but with all faults described.Uncommon for dw/dj from this era/age to survive in any state or completeness.Minimal shelf-wear - if any - to edges apart from very light bumping to head+foot of spine/backstrip - as usual/normal.Publisher's original olive green cloth bds with a blind stamped border and slight wrinkling/shrinkage of cloth, to upper bd, and stamped bright gilt letters to same and spine/backstrip, with a blind stamped publisher's colophon (?) to bottom rear corner, and sepia and white pictorial scenic decorated eps by Will(iam) G(ordon) Mein.(active 1888-1925).Worked as Will Mein.Figure painter and illustrator mainly on children's books.Lived in Edinburgh(1894) and London (1903).Much of his illustrative work is in pen and ink, drawn in a tight, formal, tidy style.T.e.g (top edge gilt) with normal, light fore-edge darkening/ageing. Off-set foxing from inner flaps to both free-endpapers,also a small water stain internally,to both front+rear corners; affecting only the paste-downs and mentioned free end-papers.Contents bright, tight and very clean with a distinct lack of foxing internally.16mo, includes, ffe, blank, half-title, b/w portrait frntis and 1 other by Elinor Dowson;intro by W. Scott Palmer (M. E. Dowson), and 3-137pp. Michael Fairless was the pseudonym of Margaret Fairless Barber(1869-1901);born Rastrick, Yorkshire and her background is explained in this biography.Having written "The Roadmender", Duckworth, 28th Feb, 1902, set in Sussex, it was an immediate best-seller and probably her best known work, written when ill and bedridden over a period of time before her death, Aug 1901;and published posthumously.It was reprinted six times in the first year and upto the the last month of 1912, as this book was about to be published, it was into its 31st impression.It wasn't until years after, that her true indentity was revealed. W. Scott Palmer(M. E. Dowson) was her friend and literary executor, whilst A. M. Haggard,is Barber's (M. Fairless) eldest sister.
