Trams originated in New York in 1832 when two horse-drawn single-deck cars reached 'breath-taking speeds on flat iron strips that served as rails'.Regular electric tram services first came to the West and South West of England at Bristol in 1895. They proved immediately popular and within a few years many other towns followed with their own systems bringing cheap travel to many who previously could not afford it. Throughout their existence electric trams proved highly successful but they were not to last.By the late 1920's and early 1930's many had outlived their usefulness. Road transport was on the increase and the rival motor bus was becoming more reliable. A comprehensive guide to the many passenger tramway systems in the area. Leslie Oppitz explains their history, the reasons for their construction and their closure. His account includes the narrow-gauge tramway at Seaton as well as the several cliff railways in the region. Also considered are the plans for the various Rapid Transit systems of tomorrow. The book has its lighter moments - such as the child who travelled by tram to a Weston-Super-Mare hospital with a chamber pot stuck on his head or the cliff railway operator who nearly had to use his first- aid skills as a mid-wife! Modern photographs accompany those taken when the tramways were busy throughout the many towns. The majority are published here for the first time in book form. His excellently written and researched book will be enjoyed both as tramway history and as a means by which the reader can explore for themselves some of the relics that have survived from the tramway age.
