Wilkinson, the inventor of dazzle camouflage, was a well-known marine painter of the early 20th century. The S.S. Metagama was an active passenger vessel that brought many immigrants to Canada. Its journey from the Island of Lewis in Scotland on 21 April 1923 was the first such event broadcast on cinema reels on both sides of the Atlantic.
