The first article, "Statesmen, Liars & Hypocrites," is reprinted from the "World Events" column from the Monthly Review, a publication featuring news analysis and political commentary. Scott Nearing (1883-1983) was an American economist, professor, and political activist. He openly advocated for peace and opposed the United States' involvement in wars including World War I and World War II. Nearing's views had a lasting effect and influenced many who opposed the Vietnam War. In "Statesmen, Liars & Hypocrites," Nearing speaks out against imperialism in Java that resulted from World War II. Excerpt from the first article: "British Labor made one of the most momentous decisions of its political career during the early days of November 1945, when it determined to support the government of Holland and crush the Indonesian republic. The decisions involved an extension rather than a shift of policy. ... People were lied, jockeyed and pushed into the wars of 1914 and 1939 by unscrupulous, power-hungry manipulators, speaking fair and false words, using public funds and working deviously and secretly to enhance their own prestige and augment the profits of their paymasters. A third world war may be prevented if the worst injustices of western civilization are ended, if public business is publicly transacted and if people check up relentlessly on their public servants." The accompanying article, "As Others See Us," is commentary about the Soviet Union during the Cold War and the United States' policies concerning the country.. Book.
