This was the first atlas published by Canada’s Department of Mines and Surveys since 1915 (42 years prior). In the words of the project’s director, N. L. Nicholson, the atlas was called into being to reflect the tremendous technological and cultural strides that had been made since the previous atlas was published, a “gap” that extended from the “horse-and-buggy age to the intriguing vista of the space age.”
