Theodore Thornton Munger (1830-1910) was a Congregational clergyman and author. He was also a proponent of "New Theology," a liberal theology influential at the time. He served as a pastor in New Haven from 1885-1901. In this letter to his daughter, Elizabeth, Theodore touches on a number of subjects. For instance, he has been spending time with Scottish author Ian Maclaren (1850-1907) who has been lecturing in New Haven. Theodore devotes about three-quarters of a page to describing the 1896 campaign for the Presidency between William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan. He writes that Bryan spoke on the Yale Campus but was not well-received by the students. A torch light parade, perhaps drawing 5,000 people, was scheduled for the next day. Theodore speculates that whoever wins, the trouble of the day will not be at an end. In Thornton's letter, he writes to Polly about watching an Athletic Game at Yale Field.. Manuscript.
