MORGAN,C[harles] L[angbridge]:** : THE GUNROOM:**

LONDON.A & C BLACK,1919.

UK,8vo HB,minus dw/dj,1st edn,1st issue.[Points:Pp78,line 16 - "Onlybyseniormidshipmenortheirequivalent," unspaced, and missing 'n' in the word and, line 32.]VG++.No owner inscrptn, minus dw/dj - copies with, are particularly scarce and few would have survived. Bright, clean, publisher's original, plain, dark blue clth bds, with bright, crisp (non-oxidised),stamped, gilt letters [author/title/pub] to spine/backstrip, which is slightly darkened, but not sunned or faded - it's normal fault, and plain white/cream eps with inevitable, ubiquitous,off-set foxing from both pastedowns. Both front and rear bds have light, slight fading to top and fore-edges due to proximity of stored, smaller books, either side of it,during it's lifetime. Some minimal foxing to ffe's+prelims up to pp4,otherwise contents bright, tight and clean.Top+fore-edges slightly aged/ darkened - as usual/normal - and very lightly, sporadically fox/spotted.Certainly one of the nicest, cleanest copies I've come across,of Morgan's scarce, first book and first novel.A copy with dw/dj virtually unheard of,this copy could have had its dw/dj discarded recently;its in that good a condition.Although a fictional account,it detailed the horrendous treatment of junior midshipmen by their senoirs, becoming an expose on Naval life and conditions, which the Admiralty frowned upon.Several days after publication the book sold well, but suddenly within a day, all copies of THE GUNROOM disappeared from circulating libraries, and all booksellers. A & C BLACK say nothing in their files suggests the book was officially suppressed,or confiscated.MORGAN himself, says in a letter to a friend:'How the book's disappearance was brought about,I don't know, but as the NAVY has a Secret Service,I draw my own conclusions.' MORGAN's 1st novel and book,a prized addition to any MORGAN collection.Book was never reprinted,at authors request, in his life-time;though there is a recent reprint of some 10 yrs or so,ago, available.SCARCE,and hard to find. Please contact seller, because of the weight and the value of this item, for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
