On a grey October day,in 1941,a convoy carrying the British 18th Division left the United Kingdom for the Middle East,in an attempt by the British Government to halt the German and Italian successes in North Africa. The Division consisted mainly of East Anglian Territorial battalions, who lacked both experience and equipment. They were freshly recruited from Cambridgeshire and the counties of Norfolk,Suffolk, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. The East Anglian troops were accompanied by men of the Sherwood Foresters,Northumberland Fusiliers, the Loyal Regiment and men from the Home Counties. Instead of the Middle East being their destination, the men of the 18th Division found themselves pitched into the dense, humid jungles of Malaya and Singapore,to fight a vicious and ruthless enemy. In the darkness and damp of the heavy jungle foliage, their desert training was useless. With very little air support, and no experience of jungle-fighting,they found themselves fighting a bitter war for survival against the battle-hardened Japanese Imperial Guards and the 5th and 18th Divisions of the Imperial Japanese Army. Handicapped by their lack of experience, unused to the conditions and climate, and sacrificed by their Government in a conflict which was already lost, only one in three of those who fought against the Japanese invasion of Malaya and Singapore survived. For the men of the British 18th Division, and for one battalion in particular, the 1st Cambridgeshires, there was untold glory, incredible courage and painful tragedy. This is their story.
