Ian Miller sets tales of thwarted heroism and misadventure in a nursery landscape which is also a Gothic hell. This nursery is a playful but ruthless place. It is the home of perverse, grossly lustful, fiendish toys.Menacing amalgams of birds, insects and battle machines fly through its sky, or trundle through its undergrowth. They bristle with fearsome artillery, snort steam and belch out mysterious passengers, while crunching and crushing each other into oblivion. In gloomy woods and marshland, tattered heroes lop and stab at each other with rusty weapons. When brains or bellies burst open, monsters and warriors gleefully leap free - only to recommence the cycle. In these stories, twisted towers, high mountain passes and crumbling Gothic cities sizzle with foreboding.Epic battles release this paranoiac tension - only to intensify it. Redemption is short circuited. The innocents slaughter the stormtroopers. Beauty eats the beast.Doom breaks out of the shell of virtue. Ian Miller's comic strip fantasies are microcosms of nervous unease. He sardonically double-bluffs us; offers our expectations sweets and toys, then strangles them to the sound of hollow laughter. There is humour in his world, but it is black;there is also logic, but it is the enclosed logic of the asylum. Captions for his pictures may be found in the novels of Franz Kafka or Kurt Vonnegut; perhaps even in The Book of Revelations. For these are twentieth century fairy tales.Like other fairy tales, they dissolve the order and emotions of our present moment in space and time to involve us in the mythic quest. But the quest leads back to its starting point. That point is the bitterness of failure;a sense of loss,of disillusionment and ironic unfulfilment. Ian Miller's world is the world of Arthur Rackham or Heath Robinson after a nuclear holocaust. All that endures in his stories is the innocent or non-human;nursery toys and puppets, the forest glade and fitful volcano. Since becoming a commercial illustrator in 1970, Ian Miller has designed book covers for stories by Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, Poul Anderson, H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick, amongst others. He has had two exhibitions in London, one at the Greenwich Theatre Gallery in 1973, the other at the Jordan gallery in 1974.In 1976, a drawing he made of Mervyn Peake's "Gormenghast" came to the attention of American animated film maker, Ralph Bakshi, of "Fritz the Cat" and "Heavy Traffic" fame.Ian Miller worked with him on a feature film called "Wizards", which has recently (then 1978) been released.
