Original keepsake printed in the form of a small broadside on white paper with text and an illustration in red, pink, and black. This broadside was printed in a small edition for members of the Sacramento Book Collectors Club by Dennis Renault at his Mockingbird Press. January 10, 1992. 8 1/2" x 15 1/2." One black and pink illustration, complete. The reprinted illustration shows a caricature of James L. Gillis and was originally drawn by Virgil Nahl. Broadside is very clean and intact. Top and bottom edges are slightly rolled. A Fine copy. Dennis Renault (b. 1936) is an American artist and illustrator who worked as a political cartoonist for The Sacramento Bee. C. K. McClatchy (1858-1936) was an American newspaper editor and a founder of McClatchy Newspapers, the predecessor of The McClatchy Company. McClatchy was a prominent editor of The Sacramento Bee and also played a significant role in the establishment of The Fresno Bee and The Modesto Bee. This broadside features a reprinted article by C. K. McClatchy, then editor of The Sacramento Bee, which was originally published on October 5, 1931. The article talks briefly about state librarian James L. Gillis (1857-1917) who was instrumental in establishing California's county library system and opening the state library to the public. Colophon at the bottom: "James L. Gillis was State Librarian from 1899-1917. In 1931, the California State Libary Reference Room was dedicated to his memory, occasioning this newspaper column. C. K. McClatchy was editor of The Sacramento Bee from 1883 until his death in 1936. His columns, titled, 'Merely A Private Think,' were compiled that year by Eleanor McClatchy and Roy Bailey, and published by The Scribner Press as Private Thinks by C. K. The portrait by Virgil Nahl, a San Francisco Examiner artist and contemporary of Gillis and McClatchy, was generously provided by the State Library for the printing of this keepsake for The Sacramento Book Collectors Club.".
