The letter, probably to Charles Thurston Thompson, gives him permission to photograph the statue of Richard Coeur de Lion. The Richard Coeur de Lion (statue) was displayed in the Great Exhibition, of 1851 and a bronze copy was made in 1860 to be displayed in front of the Palace of Westminster, where it has remained ever since. Son of wood-engraver,John Thompson and originally a wood-engraver himself, Charles Thurston Thompson shifted his focus to photography in his early thirties. He assisted Henry Cole with the photographic arrangements at the 1851 Great Exhibition and subsequently worked almost exclusively for the Department of Sciences and Art at the South Kensington Museum (later the Victoria & Albert Museum, founded by Cole).
